The Virtues of Reciting the Qur’an

The Qur’an is the word of Allah revealed to the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) for a period of 23 years through Angel Jubril.

It contains an occurrence of the past, present during the period of revelation and future. It is revealed as guidance and cure (Shifa’u) for mankind. It contains principles and guidelines to live a beneficial and successful life in this world and attain eternal bliss in the hereafter.

The word “Qur’an” is from the word ” Qurra” which means to recite, to read, so therefore it is a great book to be read, recited and memorised. There are many virtues of reciting and numerous benefits of memorising the Qur’an. The superiority of the Qur’an over the words of His creation is like the superiority of Allaah Himself over His creation. The movement of the tongue in reciting the Qur’an is the best action that the tongue may ever perform.

Some of the numerous virtues of teaching and reciting the Qur’an.

  1. The reward of teaching: The prophet SAW said: ” The best of you are those who lēarn the Qur’an and teach it.
  2. The reward of reciting: The prophet S.A.W said: ” Whoever reads one letter of the book of Allaah will be rewarded for it with a good reward, and this good reward will be increased tenfold”.
  3. The reward of learning the Qur’an, memorising it and being skilful in its recitation: The prophet SAW said: ” The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an is with the noble dutiful angels and the one who recites the Qur’an while it is difficult for him will receive two rewards. He also said: ” it will be said ( in paradise) to the reciter of the Qur’an who acted upon its teachings: read, ascend and beautify as you did in your worldly life, for indeed your level is that equal to your last verse.
  • Other virtues are:
  • The Qur’an serves as an intercessor for its reciter in the hereafter (day of resurrection).
  • It serves as a means of tranquillity for those who study the Qur’an.
  • Children who are taught the Qur’an and memorised it, act upon it will have their parents clothe them with a cloak more valuable than this world and all that is in it and also on their head will be a golden crown of light and honour.

Al Imaam Al Khattab said: it has been mentioned in a narration that the number of verses in the Qur’an is equal to the level of paradise, so it will be said to the reciter: ascend as many levels as the number of verses you used to recite of the Qur’an. Those who recited the entire Qur’an will rise to the highest level in paradise in the hereafter, and those who recited part of it will ascend accordingly until their reward is equal to the last verse of their recitation.

Therefore endeavour to make the Qur’an your COMPANION!

Allah knows best!
