Brotherhood in Islam

All praise and adoration be unto Allaah SWT, the Lord of the whole universe, the king of the day of accountability and I beseech the everlasting blessings and peace of Allaah upon the noblest of mankind, the leader of the prophet, Muhammad BN Abdillaah Abul Qaasim, his wives, children, companions and those who follow his path strictly till the day in which there will be no shade except Allaah’s shade.

May we be counted amongst those that will be under His shade Aameen- and the best of speech is the book of Allaah, the best of guidance is that of the prophet Muhammad SAW, while the worst of affairs is the newly introduced, all newly introduced are innovations, while all innovations are leading astray while all lead astrayed will be in hellfire, may Allaah save us from it, Aameen.

The following is based on brotherhood in Islaam; how it can strengthen and maintain unity.

Brotherhood in Islam is a very sacred one. There is no differentiation amongst the people; whether they are of the same blood relations, race or tribe, colour, age, status or not, what matters most is the religion (Al Islam), provided we are Muslims then we are brothers in Deen. This is more sacred than blood brothers, especially in the case of the brother being a non-Muslim due to the great importance Allaah ascribed to it.

Allaah, the exalted and the mighty mentioned in His book:

“The believers are but a brotherhood so makes reconciliation between your brothers and have taqwa of Allaah SWT in all your affairs that you may receive mercy ( surotul hujuurat: 10).

The brotherhood of the Muslims should be very strong and tight so that if ever there is any misunderstanding amongst them, it will be settled amicably without taking too long.

The Prophet SAW also said: ” Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed, then he (SAW) was asked; O Messenger of Allaah! It is right that I help him if he is oppressed but how should I help him if he is an oppressor; He said: ” By preventing him from oppressing others”.

This is telling us it is our duty as brothers to defend and help claim the right of our oppressed brother while it is also enjoined upon us to advise and correct our oppressing brother in a polite manner that will make him leave his bad habit, thus strengthening the brotherhood.

Also from the prophetic traditions:

” The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim, he is not unjust with him nor does he forsake him”.

Brotherhood in Islaam also entails us wishing for our brother that which we wish for ourselves. This can be found in the saying of the prophet; which goes thus:

” None of you believe until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” He also said: “Allaah helps his servant as long as the servant helps his brother”. This is an encouragement to help one another in what we are capable of doing.

The Muslim is also described as a body in which if an organ of it falls ill, the rest of the body responds to it. This is an indication that whatever befalls a Muslim, it concerns the Muslim in general. This can be found in the word of the prophet SAW; ” The parable of the believers in relation to the kindness, mercy and compassion they have for each other, is that of a body; when an organ of it falls ill, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness”.

Therefore it is enjoined on us all to show concern for the affairs of one another except the ones that are concealed, for it is also not right for us to seek to know what other people conceal of themselves. The Muslims have right upon one another which should be fulfilled as this will tighten the bond of brotherhood between them.

The evidence for this can be found in the words of the prophet SAW; He said: ” Rights of a Muslim upon a fellow Muslim are five; returning the greetings (the tesleem), visiting the sick, following the funeral procession, answering the call (when invited to a gathering), and greeting the one who sneezes”.

Then lastly, a great piece of advice from the best of creation (SAW); he said: ” A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other, then the prophet SAW demonstrated this by clasping his palms with his fingers interlaced i.e crossed”.

This is indeed a piece of great advice from the noble one SAW, which if made use of, will be of great benefit to the ummah, especially among the youth, who are the future and hope of the ummah.

May Allah strengthen the Muslim Ummah.
May He raise the religion (Islaam) and the Muslims, Aameen.
